How to look up Tire size

What do tyre size numbers mean?

  • To understand your tire size, you need to know its five key components:

    1. Width: The first three digits in the tire size indicate the tire’s width in millimeters, measured from sidewall to sidewall. Wider tires provide more grip but may impact fuel efficiency.
    2. Height (Aspect Ratio): The two-digit number after the slash represents the aspect ratio. It’s the percentage of the tire’s height to its width. A higher aspect ratio means a taller sidewall, which can improve ride comfort.
    3. Rim Diameter: The last number in the sequence specifies the diameter of the wheel rim in inches. This must match your wheel size for proper fitting.
    4. Load Rating: A numerical code found elsewhere on the tire, the load rating indicates the maximum weight the tire can safely support. Exceeding this limit risks tire failure.
    5. Speed Rating: Represented by a letter, it indicates the maximum speed the tire can safely maintain. Choosing a speed rating appropriate for your vehicle ensures safe and optimal performance.

Always check the sidewall of your existing tires for the correct size because using information from Google or a website may be inaccurate. Incorrect tire size can affect your vehicle’s handling, safety, and fuel efficiency, making it essential to verify directly from the sidewall.
